This earthquake was in the Southern Ocean, south of Western Australia, about 1020 km off the coast at Esperance, and 1440 km SSE of Perth. The earthquake was felt slightly at Albany and Esperance. It was followed by several aftershocks. The focal mechanism was of strike-slip movement with southeast to northwest compression [by both USGS and HVD], limiting the chance of tsunami generation, and no sign of a tsunami was detected on several tide gauges along the south coast of Australia.
