This earthquake occurred near Yerilla Homestead, about 70km west of Mundubbera and 300km northwest of Brisbane. The epicentral area is sparsely populated, but the earthquake was felt on properties within a radius of about 60km.

The epicentre of this earthquake was west of Brindabella in the northern Snowy Mountains area of New South Wales. It was about 27km south of Wee Jasper, 40km east of Tumut, and 53km west of Canberra.
Reports of the earthquake being felt were received from the epicentral area, and from Canberra. A magnitude 4.2 earthquake is normally felt over a radius of about 70 to 100 kilometres.
No foreshocks were recorded before the main shock, and no significant aftershocks following the earthquake.
An earthquake of magnitude 2.6 occurred northwest of this location on 1997 November 25 at 04:50 pm EDST. That earthquake was felt in the Wee Jasper area. Another ML 2.6 event on 1995 January 3 at 03:20 am EDST was felt at Brindabella. No significant historical earthquakes are known to have occurred in this area.

It was felt over northern Eyre Peninsula, and on Yorke Peninsula at a distance of about 110km from the epicentre. The maximum reported intensity was Modified Mercalli Intensity 4, and no damage was reported.

An earthquake of magnitude about ML 4.8 occurred in the northern Gulf of Carpentaria, about 270km east of Nhulunbuy on the Gove Peninsula and 280km west of Weipa on Cape York, on Sunday, March 29 at 01:50 pm EST. The epicentre was approximately 139.2° E, 12.6° S, and large surface waves suggest a very shallow depth. Although offshore, this was the largest earthquake in the Australian continental region in the first six months of 1998.

It was felt by many people in the Fish Creek area from Yanakie in the south to north of Foster. The event sounded like a large nearby quarry explosion, and windows rattled.

A few people at Allendale station just east of Oodnadatta heard the earthquake (MM Intensity 3). This earthquake was close to the site of a magnitude 4.1 earthquake in 1965.

This magnitude ML 4.6 earthquake occurred 12km southeast of Corryong in northeast Victoria. It was widely felt over northeastern Victoria, from Wangaratta in the west to Orbost in the southeast, and the NSW snow fields in the east. No damage has been reported.
This was the largest earthquake within Victoria since the ML 5.0 event at Mt Baw Baw on 1996 September 25.

The epicentre of this earthquake was near Mud Island in Port Phillip Bay, about 6km northeast of Portsea. This is 10km east of Queenscliff and about 55km south of Melbourne. The earthquake was relatively deep by Victorian standards, occurring almost 20km beneath the surface.
It was felt throughout the Mornington Peninsula, in Geelong, and to Bundoora in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. The maximum intensity reported to date was Modified Mercalli intensity 4, so it is unlikely that this earthquake caused any damage.
